There is a difference of going to Rooftop bars as an expat, local or tourist. I’m in Bangkok now nearly 2 years and I have never been to Lebua State Tower. Sure, the view must be great, but hey, why should I pay hundreds of Baht for a simple beer? Ripping off tourists is a lot more sophisticated in Bangkok and boy, they know every trick in the book. When I go for a rooftop bar, I simply select on 3 aspects: view, atmosphere and price. Below is a selection of my favorite rooftop bars:
Cielo Sky Bar
The easiest way to get to Cielo Sky Bar is to travel to BTS skytrain station Pra Kannong and use exit 3. From here it’s only a short five minute walk to the Luk Condominium. Walk through the complex past Max Valu supermarket and the entrance to Cielo is on the right-hand side. Is has an uninspiring entrance via an apartment building, but it’s worth a trip to see the 180 degree cityscape from the 46th floor. From here, the Chao Praya River is visible and, in the distance, lower Sukhumvit twinkles thanks to its sky scraping condos and shopping malls.
Prices are reasonable: pina colada, mojito and mai tai for around 200-250 baht, and mocktails at 120 baht.
Hilton Millenium Rooftop Bar
360 bar at Millennium Hilton is possibly one of the best rooftop bars in Bangkok but surprisingly one of the least talked about. I wonder why? 31 floors might not be as high as some famous buildings in the city, but what the Hilton lacks in stature, it more than makes up with a view that surpasses almost all other rooftops. The bar consists of two distinct areas: One is a large rectangular open air space covering the entire middle part of this tall riverside building, and the other part, as the name suggests, is an amazing 360 degrees cupola balanced one floor above.
Prices are a bit high – but still not comparable with the Sky Bar at Lebua across the river. I recommend going their during sunset time as they have a fantastic “Buy 1 Get 1 Free” promotion from 5 – 7 pm.
Octave Rooftop Bar
No rooftop bar has a 360 degree view of Bangkok that matches this, and the top floor of this three level venue is the highest spot in the city for a party. Starting on the 45th floor of the Marriot Hotel Sukhumvit, a three minute walk from Thong Lor Skytrain Station, Octave Rooftop Bar and Lounge opens at 17:00. Although the location is handy, it is slightly off the main tourist trail meaning that it is usually easy to grab a seat at one of Octave’s tables with a view. Plus: a DJ plays chillout tunes and the staff are attentive and friendly.
